Hello all!

Been playing TW 08 for some time now, but with a long gap in between. I just recently upgraded to windows 10 and got the game working BUT...

Anytime I click "Play now" it get booted to the desktop and the game crashes. Also, if I try to do anything other than play now, it says it has "Failed to initialize course". I have un-installed and re-installed.

I am using vodoo thingy I found elsewhere on this site to get the game out of the "Not enough video memory to run the game" error but I don''''t think that is the culprit.

I did install the Adobe flash and shockwave, although I don''''t know what purpose that would server because I already have the modern versions on (I think) and I did not install EA sports online because last I heard it was for internet matchups and tournaments and that server has been retired.

Is there something I am missing?

My system specs:
Asus Sabertooth z77
i7-3770k (Overclocked to 4.3 Ghz)
Win 10 Pro x64
16 GB Ram (Overclocked with CPU)
Nvidia GTX 970 (Latest Drivers)
Raptor 500 GB 10,000 RPM HD running in AHCI (NTFS File System)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

(PS, just went to custom game and the game is not showing any courses installed.)

Although we are not supposed to discuss this on here, Im going to ask anyway. Are you using a No-CD or hacked version of the game. This games old enough, that I don''t really care either way, but on Windows 10 thats going to be a critical thing to know. IF you are you need ot turn off DEP and make sure your running the game as an administrator.

Yes, its the standard practice not to discuss those things in public forums.

Yes, I am using one. Since TW08 uses secdrv.sys (or securerom or the like) and that was explicitly disabled in windows 10, it forced me to use a no-cd "patch". If windows 10 doesn't change their ways and re-instate it, I don't feel I am doing anything wrong to play a game that Windows (not the publisher) has blocked me from doing so. I hope the publishers release a patch for these games that require the secdrv.sys (or the like) to run their games in this operating system. From what I gathered by what I read today, it looks like even downgrading back to previous OS (except for XP), you will encounter this. However, there are workarounds for the previous OS's, just not 10.

I went to DEP and I think I already disabled it, unless kaspersky is disabling it for me. At least I can not check turn on or off nor can I add a program to the exception list.

***Just checked again*** looks like I have to use a program called bcdedit.exe to access the settings. I will dive into it more tomorrow night and I will report back my findings.

Would DEP be blocking the game from seeing the courses?

DEP prevents suspicious files from executing protected windows resources. It's a fail safe that pretty much pointless if you have a descent anti-virus program. Since the No-CD signature does not match the actual file it stops it from accessing things, Direct X and the registry would be two things it would block. You may need to modify your BIOS to turn it off, do a search for turning DEP off on Windows 8, same procedures work for Windows 10.

I doubt there is anyone left at EASports that even remembers this game, the focus has been consoles, streaming etc type games for several years

Ok turned off DEP for the TW2008.exe (No-patch variant). Still no courses show up as installed. I tried to do it dgVoodooSetup.exe but DEP says it must remain on for this program and can not be changed. Even with it completely turned off (using wmic OS Get DataExecutionPrevention_SupportPolicy says it is 0 which is off) no courses show up.

Has anyone figured out how to run it without the Voodoo program or is this a neccesitiy?

You can''t just turn it off for the exe. You have to shut it off globally. Here is a couple .bat files that will do it for you. You have to right click and run them as Administrator and after it''s done you need to restart. If you get an error let me know what it says.

That's just it. It is off.

I went to this website to find the command: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/disable-data-execution-prevention

I then found this to verify if off or on: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/verify-status-data-dep

It returned: 0

0 – DEP is disabled for all processes.
1 – DEP is enabled for all processes.
2 – DEP is enabled for only Windows system components and services. (Default)
3 – DEP is enabled for all processes.

Could it be the x64 system and that I have to manually install the courses?

I would like to point out that installed TW 08 Caddie x64 and run that as admin, and it says I have no courses installed as well. Although I do get an error when it runs about an unhandled exception. But it too is saying no courses are installed. I can see them all the courses folder.

AH HA!

After due diligence, I got it working. I had to install using compatibility mode. Something I did not do on the last two attempts. My courses are now there.

Maybe it was having DEP off at the time of install as well. But however, it worked!

Thank you for all your help!

Also don t forget to do the Confidence fix, it is important to do it.

There is a bug in the TW08 game, all members should do this fix.
When you played some courses you will see the loading times between holes are increasing, the game will become slower and slower.
Do next steps to solve the problem:

1) On desktop you will see the folder My Documents. Open this folder.
( when you are using Vista or Win7 or Win8: on desktop look for folder: User (or username).....inside you will find: Documents )
2) Inside Documents look for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. Open this folder and then open the folder Career
3) Inside Career open the folder Players. Inside this folder, look for your playersname folder and open it.
4) Open the folder Confidence.
5) Inside you will find these files: Hole Type.tcn and Shot Type.tcn. delete both files.
6) Important step here! Restart the TW08 game and play 1 hole on any stock course, then close TW08 game.
7) Go back to same Confidence folder and you will see both files are regenerated: but now they are very small in size.
Now right click the Hole Type.tcn file and choose Properties.
Check the box next to Read Only and click OK. Now do the same thing for the Shot Type.tcn file.

I did this long ago, but I noticed my personal player stats are not updating in my resume. I know I have hit father that 286 yards on a dive. Do these files have any bearing on getting your stats to update?

I am not sure about that, it is possible your statistics are not updated anymore after the read only, not sure though.
But you really have to do the confidence fix, when you dont then the loading times between each hole will become longer and longer, and after a few months your game will crash.
